Dental anxiety is a common issue that millions of Americans deal with. Many patients had a bad experience when they were young, while others fear pain or discomfort.

Fear and anxiety can have many different origin stories, but one thing they have in common is that your dentist can help.

At Tysons Dentistry, we offer sedation dentistry so that patients can feel comfortable and relaxed. When patients skip routine dental cleanings and exams, they become vulnerable to painful dental emergencies that can exacerbate their fear.

Sedation dentistry can come in different forms, including:

Different Types of Sedation Dentistry

Laughing gas: Otherwise known as nitrous oxide, this sedation is inhaled by patients throughout their dental procedure. Unlike other forms of sedation, this allows patients to be alert throughout the process. They can answer questions and hold a conversation with their Vienna dentist, although they will feel dreamy and detached.

We often administer a local anesthetic in combination so that patients never feel any pain. Once Dr. Ardalan Sanati and Dr. Shohreh Shahram turn off the supply, the nitrous will immediately leave the system, allowing patients to drive themselves home.

Oral sedation: Oral sedatives are pills taken by mouth, so patients don't have to worry about an IV. We have patients take their prescribed medication at least thirty minutes before their dental appointment. This type of sedative allows patients to feel calm throughout their dental appointment. To be safe, we ask that patients have a designated driver after their procedure and someone to stay with them until the oral sedative wears off.
