Tobacco and Oral Health in Vienna VA

As we understand more about how oral health is connected to your overall health and well being we know that it's never been a better time to take charge of your oral health. Our lifestyles and the daily choices that we make greatly affect our health, and tobacco use or smoking cigarettes is also detrimental to both oral health and overall health. At Tysons Dentistry we care about our patients' well being, and as your premiere dentist in Vienna, VA, we hope to be your partners and mentors in achieving optimum oral health for a lifetime. For this reason we want to share with you how tobacco affects oral health and the oral systemic connection.

Understanding the Oral Systemic Connection

Studies show that periodontal (gum) disease is directly linked with other health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. We now understand that the bacteria that causes gum disease can enter into your bloodstream and travel to other areas of your body directly contributing to inflammation in the body and other health concerns. Periodontal disease affects these other issues and vice versa. This is known as the oral systemic connection.

The Affects of Tobacco Use on Oral Health

Tobacco greatly affects your oral health. For smokers, it causes discoloration of their teeth, chronic bad breath, and it increases your risk of periodontal disease. Smoking also contributes to oral cancer and it makes dental treatments for gum disease more difficult and less effective.

Using smokeless tobacco products greatly increases your risk for oral cancer, which kills many Americans each year. Oral cancer is hard to detect on your own, and unfortunately many patients don't become aware of it until it's in its advanced stages. Visiting our office regularly for cleaning and checkups helps us detect oral cancer early on and ensures that you have the best chance for full recovery with the least invasive treatment.

We highly encourage our patients to quit smoking or using tobacco products for the benefit of not only their oral health, but also their overall health and well being. At Tysons Dental we're here to offer the support and encouragement it takes to quit tobacco use. Contact us today to schedule your next appointment and learn more about how we can help you.
