One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is a head start on good oral health. Making regular dental visits a habit when they’re young gives them the foundation to continue going to the dentist without fear or anxiety.

At Tysons Dentistry, we believe that preventive dental care is essential to oral health and encourage you to bring your children for their first appointment when they are two years old. We offer many preventive dental services, including dental sealants. So, how can sealants ensure your child’s healthy smile? Keep reading to learn more.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants protect your child’s teeth from cavities. During your child’s dental visit, we may recommend sealants if their teeth are cavity-prone or if their molars have uneven surfaces or deep grooves.

Also, because teenagers often experience tooth decay, we can add an extra layer of protection for them by applying dental sealants. If your teen wears Invisalign® clear braces, we will ask them to remove their aligners before we apply sealants to their teeth.

The Dental Sealants Process

We aim to help your child keep their teeth for a lifetime and never have to worry about dentures. Dental sealants are one way to avoid tooth decay and tooth loss; here’s what you can expect from the process:

  1. First, we will clean and dry your child’s teeth.
  2. Next, we will add an etching solution to the chewing surfaces of their teeth; this will help the sealant bond.
  3. We’ll rinse the etching solution and dry their teeth before painting the sealant onto the chewing surfaces.
  4. Using a special light, we will harden the sealant.

That’s it! The sealant treatment only takes a few minutes.
