When it comes to dental care, there are a lot of misconceptions about what is good and bad for your oral health. This can make it difficult to know what is best for keeping your teeth and mouth clean and healthy. At Tysons Dentistry, we do our best to keep our patients informed about what actually works, what doesn’t, and what should be avoided at all costs.

Misconceptions About Oral Care

  • You can’t brush too much – It may seem that brushing after every meal will help clear your mouth of food particles before they become plaque, but there is such a thing as too much brushing. Over brushing can wear down the protective enamel of your teeth, especially right after a meal when the enamel is soft from the sugar and acid you consumed.
  • Harder cleans better – This goes hand in hand with brushing too often. Using too much force when brushing or using hard bristle toothbrushes can also damage your enamel and gums. Irritated gums can pull away from teeth allowing bacteria to grow under the gum line, causing gingivitis.
  • Flossing isn’t important – Flossing is just as important as brushing. Even the most thorough brushers can miss spots between teeth and under the gum line, which is where floss comes in. When done correctly, flossing will remove the plaque from the areas your toothbrush can’t get to before it can develop into tartar and gum disease.
  • It’s ok to skip the dentist – Even those that brush and floss regularly still need to have regular cleanings and exams. Your oral health relies on more than just your oral care routine. Diet, genetics, and certain habits can also play a huge part in the health of your teeth and gums.
  • At-home whitening kits are bad – In-office whitening treatments will always be a better, more reliable option to over the counter whitening products, but those products aren’t as harmful as some people say. While they may cause sensitivity, they will eventually whiten your teeth without doing any severe damage.
