Dental lasers sound wildly futuristic. In reality, though, the idea behind them is quite simple. They use focused light energy to do work that’s traditionally called for a scalpel or a drill. Here’s a closer look at how it works and what it can treat.
Laser dentistry works by delivering a precise beam of light energy to remove or reshape tissue, usually with less discomfort than traditional tools. At Tysons Dentistry here in Vienna, VA, Dr. Ardalan Sanati and Dr. Shohreh Shahram use it for gum treatment, early decay, and soft tissue procedures.
How a Dental Laser Works
A dental laser concentrates light into a narrow beam that can cut, remove, or reshape tissue with great precision, sealing small blood vessels as it works. Our practice uses a pair of cutting-edge tools, the Waterlase®, an air-and-water laser, and the EPIC® laser (both from leading dental laser manufacturer, Biolase®) for soft tissue care.
Because the beam is so targeted, healthy tissue nearby is less disturbed. This generally means less bleeding, less swelling, and a quieter, calmer experience.
What Lasers Can Treat
At Tysons Dentistry, we use laser dentistry in a variety of cases, including:
- Gum disease treatment, removing diseased tissue and sterilizing pockets
- Gum contouring to correct a “gummy smile”
- Tongue-tie and other soft tissue issues
- Removing early decay and preparing teeth for filling
Is Laser Dentistry Right for You?
Lasers excel at soft tissue work and early decay, but they’re not a replacement for all other dental tools. Larger cavities or existing restorations may still need a traditional approach, and, though rare with proper administration, gum tissue can change from overuse. The best way to know whether laser dentistry is right for you is a consultation and exam with your dentist.
