Though children will eventually lose their baby teeth, it is still important to keep them clean and healthy. Children are much more prone to cavities and tooth decay because their teeth are often not cared for properly. Dental sealants are a great option for parents who want to help protect their children’s teeth from the bacteria and plaque that causes tooth decay. At Tysons Dentistry in Vienna, VA we offer pediatric dentistry and dental sealants to our younger patients so they can have healthy and beautiful teeth for life.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin plastic film that is placed on the chewing surfaces of your teeth. This sealant creates a barrier between the tooth and bacteria so it can’t eat away at the surface of the tooth and cause cavities. Generally, sealants can last around five to seven years, making them a cost effective way to protect your child’s teeth.

Why are Dental Sealants Important?

If we do not brush and floss regularly, the bacteria in our mouth mixes with the sugar and acid in the foods we eat to create plaque. This plaque sticks to our teeth and, if not removed regularly, can start to eat away at the tooth. Sealants create a barrier so that the plaque cannot cause damage to the tooth and, when combined with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, they are one-hundred-percent effective at preventing cavities.

Pediatric Dentistry

Children should start their dental visits as early as two in order to get them on the right path. If children develop cavities in their baby teeth, it can spread and cause damage to the permanent teeth forming inside their gums. Cavities effect more than seventy-percent of children by the age of twenty which is why dental sealants are so important to their oral health.
