Is it time to start thinking about your child’s first dental appointment?
If your child has his or her first tooth or is approaching their first birthday, it’s time to schedule an appointment! If your child is older and hasn’t seen a dentist yet, don’t worry. It’s never too late to get started.
This is an exciting time – and it can also lead to a number of questions and some apprehension on the part of you, the parent.
We want to reassure you that we are fantastic when it comes to kid’s dentistry here at our Tysons Corner dental office. We take the time to make sure your child feels comfortable and safe and to answer all your questions.
What Happens at the First Dental Appointment?
The most important aspect of every child’s first dental appointment – regardless of age – is making sure that they recognize that a dentist’s office is a safe, normal, and even fun place to be. We also want to make sure that they see that the dentist is a friendly person.
Why are these details so important?
Unfortunately, the media – even children’s shows and movies – has a tendency to portray dentists as scary or mean. Dental fears are very real, and they can start early in childhood. By normalizing the dental office and establishing a positive relationship between your child and the dentist, we can help counteract these images and get your child off to a great start.
Building good habits starts now! The habits your child will develop early will stay with him or her throughout their life. We’ll help by providing you with the information you need to guide your child at home. As your child gets older, we’ll talk about good habits and provide the support and encouragement needed to foster these habits for a lifetime.
Depending on your child’s age, we might begin with a quick tour of the office. We have an attractive and inviting office – and we even have mounted TVs in the treatment rooms so your child can enjoy a favorite show or movie! Your child will get to go for a ride in the dentist’s chair, which is always an exciting part of the appointment for kids.
If your child is willing, we’ll take a peek and check that development is proceeding normally. We generally don’t try to do a cleaning or any other dental work on this initial appointment. The goal is really to meet your child and establish the relationship.
We’ll discuss early childhood dental topics such as home care of developing teeth and good eating habits. We’ll also address common parental concerns such as thumb sucking and pacifier use.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to let us know! Drs. Sanati and Shahram are parents to a five year old themselves, so they know exactly what it’s like and can help you plan the best dental future for your children.
