How Workplace Sweets Are Harming Your Oral Health

A recent study looked at the workplace eating habits of more than 5,000 people across the United States and concluded that nearly a quarter consumed 1,300 extra calories per week just from food obtained at work.

This workplace food tended to be loaded with empty calories, sugars, and other unhealthy components.

You make healthy choices at home, planning your meals carefully. Snacks are sugar-free and rich in lean proteins, but if someone at work brings in candy or donuts, you’re likely to indulge. Aren’t we all?

Of course, these extra calories can put a wrench in your fitness goals, but it’s also important to consider how workplace sweets harm your oral health.

The Oral Health Consequences of Consuming Sweets at Work

At Tysons Dentistry, we understand that being hungry at work is never pleasant, so when someone offers free food, you indulge, promising yourself that it’s just a cheat. You’ll get back to healthy eating tomorrow.

Aside from being hungry, eating workplace snacks simply helps to pass the time.

But if you arrive at work and have a donut from the employee lounge, for example, the sugar is going to stay on your teeth throughout the day. If you drink sugary soda after lunch, you’re exposing your teeth to sugar and acid.

The problem is these sweets cause cavities!

The solution is to keep your own healthy snacks and lunch supplies at work, foods that are not a threat to your oral health.

Almonds and sugar-free yogurts are great choices, as are raw vegetables like carrots and celery. Salad, too, is a fantastic option, but be wary of salad dressings. Most of the commercial brands are loaded with sugar!

If you have been indulging in workplace sweets, make an appointment today with our skilled dentist in Vienna, VA to have a checkup!
