Could Fillings Last Even Longer? A New Study

Dental fillings are one of the most common procedures performed by dentists. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that nearly 80% of us have at least one filling in our mouths!

Today fillings are made using a strong, durable composite resin material. With normal wear and tear, you can expect a resin filling to last for about seven to ten years. But at some point, it will fracture and your dentist will need to replace it so your tooth is adequately protected.

Pine Tree Bark Does What?

But what if there was a way to increase the lifespan of fillings? A recent study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago undertook a study find a way to do just that. They found the answer in, of all things, an extract from the bark of pine tree roots.

When you have a cavity, your dentist removes the damaged part of the tooth and replaces it with a filling. However, a weak link has always existed between the dentin, (the softer layer beneath your dental enamel) and the filling material, which leads to failure after about ten years.

However, researchers discovered that extract from the bark of pine tree roots actually alters the chemical makeup of a tooth to make it stronger and allow fillings to bind to them better. The hope is that a refined extract will be developed for practical use by dentists to apply to a tooth after drilling to strengthen it and ensure a better bond with the filling.
