Most people want white teeth, yet white spots on your teeth may not be as desirable. Even with whitening treatments and regular brushing, white spots can be difficult to remove. At Tysons Dentistry, we offer Resin Infiltration treatments to help reduce or remove white spots and enamel defects from your teeth before they cause major dental concerns so you can have a healthier, more beautiful smile.

What Causes White Spots?

White spots begin to appear on teeth after there has been a mineral loss of the tooth’s enamel, called hypocalcification. It may seem like these spots are just a cosmetic concern but they can actually lead to the deterioration of the tooth. White spots can be the first sign of a cavity and should be treated as soon as possible before bacteria has a chance to eat away at the lesion and cause more extensive damage.

The most common cause of hypocalification is poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, yet there are several other causes as well, including dry mouth, consumption of acidic foods and drinks, excessive fluoride treatments, whitening strips, and genetics. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, you can help lessen your chance of developing these lesions.

Resin Infiltration

When you go in for a resin infiltration treatment, your dentist will first open the pores of the lesion using hydrochloric acid to allow the low viscosity resin to penetrate these pores and fill in the defect in your tooth. By using capillary action, it allows the resin to fill in the damaged area of your tooth completely. Once the resin has hardened, it will protect the lesion from cavity-causing bacteria and reduce the appearance of white spots on your tooth’s surface.

Why Choose Resin Infiltration

Though the resin infiltration treatment is fairly new, it is also the most effective and affordable way to treat white spots. Other treatments, such as veneers, can cause permanent damage to your teeth.
