Oral Health – What This Means to Your Dentist

Until recently, the definition of oral health has been the absence of disease. But a recent article published in the Journal of the American Dental Association discusses an updated definition of oral health.

Why do we need a new definition for oral health?

Researchers are increasingly finding connections between good dental health and numerous other areas of our lives. If you have ever lived with damaged or missing teeth, you know it affects a lot more than your oral health. Good oral health, or the lack thereof, affects your confidence, your mental health, and your overall physical health.

A new definition was needed to include the full scope of health and well-being that surrounds oral health.

How does this change how your dentist treats you?

In practice, this does not change how we approach and treat dental conditions. Our goal has always been to educate our patients about the benefits of a healthy smile, and that won’t change. But it does reinforce the fact that we have a responsibility to treat you, not just your teeth! Your feelings about your oral health should always be a factor when we talk to you about achieving a healthy smile.

Does this change how I should manage my oral health?

The updated definition doesn’t change how you should approach your oral health. But it shows that the condition of your teeth has a direct impact on other important areas of your life. Taking care of your dental health doesn’t just keep you out of the dentist’s office; it has benefits that reach far beyond a healthy smile.
