As we get older it is natural for our oral health to decline, and though our teeth are meant to last a lifetime, many people still find themselves needing dentures. As time goes by, our dental technology advances, and this includes the production of better and more comfortable dentures. Yet, there are still many misconceptions about dentures. The dentists at Tysons Dentistry want to make sure you are informed about the different types of dentures out there, how to care for them, and how they can benefit you.

Misconceptions About Dentures

You can’t eat whatever you want – Unfortunately, when you lose your teeth, you may have to change your diet but dentures will often be able to give you back the ability to eat the things you want. Foods like apples and corn on the cob can be put back on the menu as long as you care for your dentures correctly.

Dentures last forever – Just because dentures are not real teeth doesn’t mean that they will last forever. With proper care and cleaning, and regular visits to your dentist, dentures will generally last about five to seven years.

I don’t need to clean them – Just like with natural teeth, dentures still need to be cared for on a regular basis. Not cleaning them can cause bacteria to build up in your mouth and still cause infection or gum disease. It will also mean your dentures will have to be replaced sooner than later.

Dentures are uncomfortable – One of the benefits of new technology is that dentures no longer have to be uncomfortable to wear. Dentures are designed to fit your mouth securely and comfortable so you can easily wear them all day without any issues.

They are obvious – Your dentures should fit firmly to your gums. If they slip or are uncomfortable it is a sign that they are not fitting properly and you should see your dentist. Other signs of improper fit are clicking, they have an unpleasant smell, or they are causing you pain.

You need to use adhesives – Even though there are several adhesive products available for dentures, it is not necessary to use them and prolonged use can actually hide dental problems. If you feel like your dentures are loose, and adhesive can be used until you see your dentist, but ill-fitting dentures need to be fixed.
