How to Handle a Dental Emergency

Drs. Sanati and Shahram will always do their best to see you as quickly as possible in an emergency. In the interim, taking the proper steps until you can get to our office can often make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

Important Note: Call 911 or go to an emergency room immediately if you have been in an accident or experienced dental trauma that includes injury to the head or jaw.

Severe Toothache Pain: A sudden, severe toothache indicates that a serious problem is developing and should be attended to as quickly as possible. Possible causes of severe toothache pain are decayed, cracked, or broken teeth; a lost or cracked filling; or advanced gum disease.

A raised bump on your gum is an indication that your tooth may be abscessed and a root canal may be necessary. Until you can get to our office, ice packs placed on and off the area at 20-minute intervals can provide some relief from the pain.

Knocked-Out Tooth:  Prompt action on your part will significantly improve the odds of saving a tooth that has been knocked out. Avoid touching the root of the tooth. Hold the crown of the tooth very carefully and rinse gently in water. Do not brush or scrub the tooth because this will disturb attached tissue fragments.

You can try to gently place the tooth back in its socket, but do not force it. If this is not possible, do not allow the tooth to dry out – place it in a cup of milk or warm water until you get to our office.

Broken Tooth: Use warm water to rinse your mouth and clean the area. A cold compress placed on and off the affected area every 20 minutes can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Lost Filling or Crown: Losing a filling or dental crown not only causes pain but can also weaken the structure of your tooth. Contact our office immediately to avoid the possibility of further damaging the tooth.
